Technical Question: What is the Black Coating on the Monza?

A technical question, please -- What is the material used to coat the vintage Monza, circa 1976? We refer to some of the vintage Heuers (Monaco and Carrera, for example) as being "PVD-coated", but we know that the material was not actually PVD. So who can tell me what this material actually was?

Thanks,

Jeff
