All good regarding the comments from Aurel Bacs about this watch, with its replacement bezel.
I have received a nice note from a friend at Phillips, confirming that Aurel did not mean to single out a specific watch or brand, but was commenting on a broader, more general type of situation.
: Thanks, Jeff, for bringing this to our attention.
: It's difficult to tell whether Mr. Bacs was trying to recount an
: actual story, about an actual watch, or whether this was a
: dramatization / illustration.
: Assuming that it was an actual story -- If I had to guess the watch
: he might have been referring to, then the issue was not simply a
: matter of the bezel being replaced, but there were legitimate
: questions about the history of this particular watch (when it
: was made and by whom). And there were lots of whispers about
: this watch for several years (probably six or seven), but these
: were conversations among members of the community and not on any
: public forum. The whispers were not about the bezel, but about
: the entire watch having been "made" circa 2010. So his
: whole monologue about a restoration, with the bezel being
: replaced, was kind of strange to me.
: It's difficult to be certain which watch he was discussing or what
: his complaint about the community / collectors might be. I would
: be happy to discuss this with anyone involved in the matter, who
: may have more facts.
