Leftover "Viceroy" Sold in 1974, for $88

Bernard Devos has just sold an interesting Viceroy Autavia, over on ChronoTrader. Here's what makes it interesting, at least to me:

  • It looks like a standard production Viceroy Autavia
  • The 271xxx serial number tells us that it is from the sixth and final batch of Viceroy Autavias, as Mark established HERE
  • We see that the watch was sold in early 1974, well after the end of the Viceroy promotion (late 1972)
  • the watch was sold through MG Mitten, a company that sold automotive and racing equipment.
  • The watch was sold for $88, perhaps suggesting that well after the Viceroy promotion had ended, Heuer was still clearing out the leftover Viceroys, at the friendly $88 price.
  • Interesting to see the instructions, in a format that we do not see often.
Yes, it can be interesting to see what a serial number and receipt can tell us about a watch!! This must be one of the last of the Viceroys, sold for $88, through one of Heuer's regular retailers, rather than through the Viceroy promotion.

Here is my write-up of the Viceroy promotion, on Hodinkee -- http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/ode-to-smoke. This watch represents a little footnote to the story.
