Sometimes the problem is user error. Many people are not used to the behavior of self-winding mechanical watches and do not understand that it takes more than just wearing them some every day or every other day to keep them sufficiently wound.
Not understanding this can cause you to mistake the normal behavior of an insufficiently wound watch as a defect in the watch.
It is sad, because the blame is on the watch manufacturers for not including enough instructions to explain proper use of mechanical watches to a society that has mostly grown up wearing no-fuss battery operated quartz watches.
