Nikon Coolpix ( like Chuck )
In Response To: Digital camera choice ()

I use a similar Nikon model to Chucks. Mine is the Nikon 950 coolpix.

mine "only" has 2.11 Million pixels ( Laughable by todays standards ), but when the Coolpix range was released in 1999 they set the standards.

The truely amazing feature of the these cameras ( for us watch guys ), is their Macro capability. They can focus on a subject that is less than 1 inch away !!!

However the disadvantage is that you can't use the timer function ( put the camera on a tripod, press the button & 10 secs later it takes the pic ) with Macro, so you have to manually press the button & try NOT to move the camera.

Another "disadvantage" is the "delay" when taking a picture. My son plays football (soccer). IF I try to take a picture during the game, the moment is gone when the camera takes the picture. thius however is not a problem when taking pics of cameras.

It also has no firewire/USB outputs.

I'm sure newer cameras can deliver more now, but to be honest, If you buy a second hand Coolpix, you won't pay much now & you get a great camera.

A review of the 950

So, now having said what it's problems are.... here are a couple of my close up pics..
an 861 movement

& an extreme close up of the movement number..

I have deliberately "Blurred" the number.

This quality is more than enough for me & my capabilities.
