Re: I missed the 72 hr window...
In Response To: I missed the 72 hr window... ()

: OK, so it sounds like it needs some work on
: the movement, but as you say it is about 40
: years old. It doesn't sound like scrap.

Hi, I hope not! But I'm not a watchmaker so I can't tell. I'll draw the analogy with a car ... I don't mind buying used and replacing tires, changing the oil, etc. ... but I certainly wouldn't want to buy one with a blown motor and transmission ;)

:
: I wouldn't automatically say that if a watch
: has patina that it should be re-worked &
: made to look new. I did tha recently with my
: flightmaster, but I have plenty of watches
: that don't look new, show their age & I
: like them like that !

100% agreed, I don't want to restore to "new" condition at all but just to remove some discoloration and dirt from the dial (i.e. restore hour markers to white)

: It doesn't sound like a HUGE movement problem,
: to me. I'd probably take it to my local
: watchmaker.

Unfortunately there are none ... a dying breed unfortunately.

: - What did the watch cost ? If it was
: expensive, it should work properly. If it
: was "the right price" I'd accept
: some work.

: - How was it described ? as fully functional ?
: as recently serviced ?

Advertised as fully functional, but not recently serviced. I don't mind paying for a service (seals, lubrication etc.) but I don't wnat to get into a situation where the movement is considered to be unfixable.

: - How long have you been looking for a 321 ? If
: this is the watch that "speaks to
: you" then maybe I'd be prepared to
: accept a movement check. If it
: "just" a 321 speedy maybe I
: wouldn't accept it.

It's a great watch ...

: - Did you point out the problems to the seller
: ? maybe you could split the cost of a
: service ? at a watchmaker that you know
: & trust ?

This is what I am hoping to work out with the seller - waiting to hear back now.

: - What is the rest of the watch like ? Box,
: papers, right bracelet ? etc etc

No box or papers, missing the bracelet which was one of the things I liked about this one ... I don't care for the original bracelets used on the 321s (cheap looking to me) and had I paid $$ for the original bracelet in any event I would have removed it and put on a nice strap. If I want a nice bracelet I'd go for the current model Speedy .

: I know some other collectors have very
: different standards to mine. So I'm sure
: some guys out there, will disagree with me (
: as Georges did already )

Agreed ... personally you and I seem to be in a similiar mindset, I am not one of those people who wants a 100% perfect "as new" watch that can only stay in a drawer because it might get scratched ... I just need it to work reliably ;)

Thanks for the input!
