To add to this debate, I have just bought the mid size Seamaster as my first 'proper' watch and went through this thought process. I wanted the full size and tried on both (a number of times!) and even though everything I read said to go for the larger version as an investment, the jeweller told me to buy the one I felt comfy with as I would own it for a long time. As has probably been said, it's a personal decision and you have to go for the one that feels right on your wrist and not bow to peer pressure!

On the basis I can't stop looking at my wrist, I think I made the right choice!
