Update on lemon Seamaster

Hello all,

After all the advice about my lemon, here is an update. Beinne have replied stating -

"It is difficult for us to give you the cost of a repair without having first examined your watch. Nevertheless, on our website you will find a repair price list with recommended retail prices in Swiss francs"

This is a similar line to that taken in the UK by Swiss Time Services who want a small fortune to "rebuild" or replace the movement.

Anyway, when I bought the watch there was something odd about the reference number on the case. Here is the watch -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8933373895&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3D8933373895%26fvi%3D1

The reference number is 166.002 which Omega site tells us is a very similar watch but with a date function. (Thanks to Steve and Jason for the help re this.) I noticed that the hands on this watch do not reach as far as the minute markers which seemed slightly odd, but not unknown.

I found another watch marked 166.002 without a date function. Here it is -

http://www.pmwf.com/Watches/WatchSchool/WS%207%20VintageOmegaSeamasterGasketRingReplacement/VintageOmegaSeamasterORingReplacement.htm

I wondered if this meant that the Omega info was inaccurate in some way.

I have since found a "conventional" 166.002 which can be found here -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8925180945&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

This one matched the Omega info completely. It also has similar hands to my watch. You will see that the dial on this watch has minute markers on the inside of the hour markers, so the shorter hand does reach.

My conclusion from all of this is that my watch has been put into the wrong case at some point, and has either been given the wrong hands or, at the very least, the wrong style of dial.

Does anyone have a different view?

P.S. The Ebay seller had dissappeared but is now back in business. The watch is going back for a refund next week. Very sad, but best all round, me thinks.

Can anyone suggest somewhere else to get a decent vintage watch in the UK? Or should I have another go with Ebay? I quite like the 166.002 shown above, but I would only buy again with a clear return promise if I was not happy!
