Re: Should I get a Speedie? HELP!
In Response To: Should I get a Speedie? HELP! ()

: Hi there. OK, Up until today I thought I wanted
: a Speedmaster Date....until I tried on a
: Speedmaster Pro! I'm a gal who loves larger
: watches and actually felt as if the Speedie
: Date was a bit small and unexciting.

: Anyway, I do love the look of the Speedie Pro,
: but am concerned about 2 things...a hesalite
: crystal (all of my watches have sapphire),
: and the fact that it's NOT self-winding
: (again, my other automatic is self-winding).

: Help? Do I need to be concerned about these?
: Will hesalite scratch? Is it strong? As for
: winding, will I need to wind the watch
: everyday?

Hesalite does indeed scratch easily since it is just plastic (acrylic), but these scratches can easily be buffed out. It is shatterproof, unlike sapphire crystals, which is why it was chosen for use in the Moon Watch. Sapphire crystals are virtually scratch proof but they will shatter if they are dropped onto a hard surface.

The Speedy Pro has a 48 hour power reserve, so winding it every other day would be sufficient to keep it wound.

If you are concerned about the hesalite, you could look at the "sapphire sandwich" version (model 3573.50.00). It has a sapphire display back in addition to a sapphire crystal. However, it retails for $750 more than than the $3000 standard model 3570.50.00.
