Diamond paste is hideously expensive, hard to find, and I doubt you could do it with just one grade. You would ahve to start witha 45 micron, and then maybe go down toa 30 and a 15, and it takes FOREVER to do this. About 30 years ago in 3M's industrial abrasives division we had diamond wheels ( the paste ones were actually plywood discs which we just put the paste on) and it took hours of time to polish down our aluminum oxide (same as sapphire) for microphotography.
