SMP bracelet divers extension "loose"

My SMP bracelet is, other than being a scratch magnet (I wear it daily) just lovely, I wanted the watch mainly on the basis of the dial and case, the bracelet was never much of a concern but I've grown to really like it.

The divers extension, which has never been used for more than a cursory opening out of curiosity seems to be loose- as in the bracelet on that side can shift up and down almost 1mm.

I think this is because the "spring" that holds the extension shut is compressed slightly leaving the bracelet room to slide around on the pin.

Is this usual? I realise its rather trivial but on an otherwise perfect watch its alittle irritation I'd like to remove if I can- can the divers extension be "prised" open to give less movement safely?

Any advice would be great.

(Next step to brush the scratches out- how often do regaular wearers do this, can it be done periodically without causing too much long term damage? I've assumed I'll have to replace it eventually but would prefer to delay this if I can)
