: Hi Guys,

: Do we have any PloProf fans out there ?

: What do you think of the Ocean 7 PloProf
: Hommage that has been announced ?

: Here's a link to a Thread on the watch

: Notice the different crown.

: I like the watch, I like the hommage &
: think it is different enough that it should
: be easy to tell a hommage from an original.

: I fully reaslise that there is a potential for
: fakes to be fashioned out of the hommages,
: but lets face it there are already fakes out
: there.

: If you want to read about fake PloProf's you
: can do no better than to visit => www.
: DeskDivers.com

: Finally, whilst surfing around for PloProf
: stuff, I found that Mitch at Ocean7 has had
: some Saphire Crystals made for the PloProf.
: => Details here

: I have ordered 1 for my watch & a spare.

: They arrived this morning. I obviously haven't
: had time to get one fitted yet, but looking
: at Nalu's pics in the above thread, they
: should look great on the watch.

: Here are a couple of pics of my PloProf.

I'm a vintage watch guy, a chronograph and dress watch guy, with a flavor for the unusual and the ones I find wearable.

I'm not a "tool watch" guy, so you may wish to ignore me starting now.

I will likely never buy a Ploprof because it is not a wearable watch to me. I understand perfectly its appeal due to its history and uniqueness. But I buy watches to wear, and the Ploprof wouldn't get worn.

The Ocean 7 homage similarly has no appeal to me, for the same lack of wearability.

I am vaguely irritated by the deliberate attempt to mine someone else's history. I feel the same way about this as I do about the modern Ford Mustang, compared to the classic Mustang -- if it were produced by Kia or Hyundai.

It (the modern Ford) is a clearly better car in many ways: more reliable engine, better fit and finish, more passenger and driver comforts and accessories, and I suspect better handling. But it ain't the original and it never will be. It just suggests a bygone era. But I don't want one . . . I'd rather have the original with all its faults. Some can't afford that, and this serves, as well as being a pretty cool modern auto.

But when the alternative is not a imperfect reproduction produced by Ford, but one by a company with no connection to the original, it just doesn't sit well with me.

I wouldn't organize a protest or anything, but I won't encourage the Ocean 7's purchase either.

Sam
