Accuracy and adjustments

What sort of accuracy is reasonable to expect from a non-chronometer automatic watch? At what point would you suggest that it be adjusted? What exactly are they doing when the adjust the accuracy? How much freedom do they have to actually get it dead on?

I have heard that a "chronometer" is -6to+4 sec/day. I assume that if all that is going on is that they didn't want to bother to have it certified as a chronometer, that should be attainable. How much worse are the non-chornometer grades of ETA movements if there is such a thing? How much worse are other brands like say Tissot or the Seiko diver?

Thanks,
Ed
