watchwinder for smp 300

I was wondrering if any of you guys have been using watch winders. Are they actually effective in winding the watch, or are they simply to help keep the lubricants well distributed? If they are effective as winders, what are the most reliable brands to consider for purchase? How many turns per day (minimum) is effective? Thank you for having such a great forum for beginners like me!!! Many thanks for any suggestions that you might have. Peter
