Auto vs. quartz...yes, agian!!

I read a post on another forum from aguy who had his Speedy reduced just lying around. His Father asked to borrow it, as his watch had been broken or lost. The poster refused to loan it to his own Father becuase he just isn't very careful with things. Some of you may recall that this is why I de-gifted my wife of the vintage Seamaster, and got her a quarts mid size Bond. I had been told that for the 'most part' that the quartz was more rugged. This may or may not be true. It doesn't matter. I beleive it, and that's all that matters.

I was sitting around last night winding watches, setting dates and so on. I suddenly came to the realization that for 'me' anyway, automatics and hand wounds are really grown-up toys. Because I'm such a mechanical moron, I will 'never' understand what actually makes these things work. I've read a lot, I subscribe to WatchTime, but no matter how much I read, I still don't get it. Terms like escapement, rotor, tourbillon etc., go way over my head.

So why do I own automatics? They're toys. I don't need to know hom my vintage Lionel train set works, in order to appreciate it. I don't need to know how my computer works, in order to post this message. I don't need to know how electricity works in order to flip a switch.

My wife wanted a watch she could just put on and wear. It is not a toy to her. She has other toys. Maybe that didn't come out right! lol I don't care if I'm a few seconds or a few minutes fast or slow every once in a while. If I was, I'd be in a panic if one of them came to a dead stop, sitting in a nice little padded drawer.

Having said all that, quartz "is" the right choice for certain people. Actually it's the right choice for 'most' people. If only 10% of the population owns automatics, it 'must' be the right choice. Having a quartz, doesn't make it any less of a watch. Perhaps toys for grown-ups aren't as important to them. Perhaps they have other toys. Vintage cars, model kits or model railroads that they play with. They just want a nice timepiece, to accurately tell the time. There is nothing inherently wrong with this.

So in conclusion, my little pea brain has decided that no matter 'what' you choose, you have made the right decision.

Regards...

Dave
