OK.. disclaimer first - I have never even held an X33 (I have a GMT) but I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about.

I'm guessing the watch lights up using the same technology as the Timex Indiglo (they probably licensed it since it's a patented product).

The electroluminescence technology that your watch uses to make light requires a pretty high voltage. Since you've only got a small battery in the X33, you need a big transformer It's that transformer that causes the whine.

Go to www.howstuffworks.com for a better explanation - search for indiglo

BTW, if that whine bothers you to much, you can just give the watch to me ;-)

: I just received a x 33 for Christmas and love
: it, I've wanted one to compliment my
: Seamaster Chrono. for quite awhile. Has
: anyone noticed the x 33 'ticking' when held
: within earshot and/or the 'slight ringing'
: after the light button is pushed, until the
: light goes off? Is this normal? Thanks and
: Happy New Year to all- Steve
