I've got an older Speedmaster 861 that exhibited the same problems for a while before stopping completely. (although I didn't drop it.)
I sent it off to a watchmaker, and he told me the (insert name of watch doohickey here) was broken. The part was about $45 and it wasn't going to be a big deal to replace it.
Since the watch is my daily wearer, I'm having him do a complete service on it.
I don't think it should be all that expensive to fix yours.
