Winding

I'm new to wearing a manual watch and having just got my new 70s Carrera. Its was not running, so I started to wind. 10 or so minutes later I had enough, set the time and date and its been running well. Yet there still seems to be a lot of winding to go ! How many revolutions of the crown is required and is it possible to overwind ? Thanks for any feed back, I feel a little dumb !
