Preview of the Monaco "Piece d'Art" by Nic Foulkes

Here's a quick description of the Monaco Piece d'Art, by Nic Foulkes, writing in GQ Britain --

Foulkes lists the following five features of the watch --

  • first, it is new old stock (right down to the instruction manual);
  • second, the movement has been disassembled and reworked to haute horlogerie standards, including polished angles and all that;
  • third, it has been upgraded from 17 jewels to 20;
  • fourth, the caseback has been opened (purists will be relieved that the disc of steel was kept and comes with the watch); and
  • fifth, it probably works better than the original (the Cal 11, while revolutionary in that it was a self-winding chronograph, lacked in performance, the date change was a terrible drain on a very small rotor and the crown was at nine o’clock).

Wonderful that the watch achieved the final price of $81,250.
