The Porsche in Opening of "Le Mans"

Arno:

the book has an articel covering this car, in detail. I will take the book to work, and try to post the answers to your questions.

short answer: 1970 911S; purchased by the production company and delivered by Porsche directly to Le Mans; used by Steve, as his personal car, during the filming; after filming, shipped to Steve in California. Steve sold this one soon afterwards, as he already had a very similar one (from 1969) that was his daily driver. So, you may ask, why did Steve keep the 1969 and sell the 1970 model? The book suggests that the 1969 car had a better stereo!!

: David, fantastic find, would this be the car Steve drove in the
: opening scene or a car which was owned by Steve Mcqueen ?
: It looks to be a long wheelbase B series car, hence Modelyear 1969.
: Is it a 2.0l or 2.2l ? The gold Porsche 911 S lettering on the
: back would possible make it a 1968 car.
: Think the 911 Steve drove was frost blue if I remember correctly a
: Euro version. This car you have spotted has the US front lights,
: do you know if the car was shipped over to Le Mans converted and
: then shipped back ?
: I always thought the car in the film Le Mans was a 1971 MY and
: given to the Film Crew by the Swiss Porsche dealer Jo Siffert
: who also provided and organised/prepared the Porsche 917/908
: during filming.
: Just really curious...
: Cheers
: Arno
