even if we get no respect ourselves, at least we can impress people (or at least some small portion of the general population) with our watches and cars. Personally, I do better in the watch category than in the car category.

But, of course, the real satisfaction is in our own appreciation of these machines (and the admiration and goodwill of our online community).
