Heuer Box, AF Watch, and Orvis Hands and Bezel

If this was the one that we recently saw on eBay [with closing price in the $3,600 range], then I summarized it to one enthusiast as being "a Heuer box, Abercrombie & Fitch watch (dial) and Orvis hands and bezel."

In all seriousness, there are two scenarios here:

  • some would say that toward the end of the Seafarer lifespan, in the mid-to-late 1970's, Heuer was probably pulling whatever it could find from the parts bin; so here we have an Abercrombie watch, with the later hands and bezel, from the Orvis parts bins.

  • another explanation would be that the watch started as a pure Abercrombie, with the usual MH bezel and unpainted steel hands, and then had the hands and bezel replaced with the Orvis pieces, perhaps while being serviced later in its life.
If you are dealing with the original owner of the watch, perhaps he can tell you about the watch's history: was it like this from birth or were parts replaced during servicing?
