Just goes to show how that style was in fact dictated by the dialmaking companies rather than the manufacturers. You got what they had, basically, unless you arrived with a big briefcash of cash to pay for something bespoke.
As Jeff says, the date window is a bit of an anachronism. I feel they're perhaps drawing too much attention to it - lose the silver frame, make it a plain cut-out into the dial and use a white on black date wheel and it would be more subtle and in keeping with the rest of the watch.
