Blood, Fire and Fumes

I'm not sure how many of the ten plagues we can find in tobacco or auto racing, but here's a bit of irony relating to the Brown & Williamson "Racing" campaign. An internal memo at Brown & Williamson (July 1976) that summarized Viceroy's advertising objectives and strategies from 1936 through 1975 provided the following summary of the "Racing" campaign.

"Though the racing campaign has probably solidified the brand's full-taste positioning, it has not stimulated trial [new consumers for the brand] and has evoked negative reactions from consumers due to some of the grim aspects of racing (blood, fire, unpleasant fumes, etc.). The racing campaign never generated an improvement in sales and, in fact, can be accused of accelerating the decline."
How about that . . . a tobacco company being turned off by the blood, fire and fumes in auto racing!!
