Re: Most Important Item: Serial Number

Thanks for the serial Abrod, it helps a lot. Without it, and even with the description, we'd be looking at anywhere in a span of 5-6 years.

Even with it, we are relying on some research, precedence and a little bit of guesswork, but each serial we learn gives us a little more information amd makes the next estimate that little bit more accurate.

With your watch, we get a little bit lucky too. It fits nicely into a batch of 2447s, somewhere around 2000 wide. There are a number of discrete batches earlier and quite a few after. So it puts it somewhere around the middle of the first execution watches (for more details on what first execution means I recommend http://www.onthedash.com/Guide/Master_Reference.php4 and the galleries at http://www.onthedash.com/Guide/_Chronographs/63.Carrera/a.Manual_%281960s%29/ ). And, blimey, from the first link I can see that the revision of the Carrera table is now 3.5 YEARS OLD!!!!

Anyway, that's not where we're lucky. That's where your watch sits in relation to serials for a model we know was introduced in 1966, the Dato 45. That starts around 71xxx. Which puts your watch either towards the end of 1965 or just into 1966, with a pretty high level of confidence.

As to what more information we can give, that depends what you're interested in. Searching for Carrera on here will give lots of results too, and you can refine with keywords like "first generation" or "2447".
