Avoiding paying the VAT at source is going to be tricky - it's unlikely the auction house will be able to legally provide you with a tax-free invoice. However, they could (the onus is on them though) provide you with a HMRC VAT 407 form, which would enable you to reclaim the VAT upon exiting the country at the airport.
