large or small , new or old ?
In Response To: Speedy Pro or Auto? ()

: Hello All,
Hi Geetarz ( & everyone else )

: Looking for advice (and education) for a Speedy
: purchase. I've owned a Rolex Sub Date for
: 20+ years and been super happy with it -
: it's been off my wrist perhaps 12 hours in
: all that time. But I've always lusted after
: a Speedy as well and in the past few days
: the urge to pick one up has become
: overwhelming .
OK, you've come to a pretty good place for advice.

We can all too well understand the urge to get a speedy on your wrist :-)

: My previous experience has been exclusively
: with the "moonwatch" as a good
: friend owned one for years. But I'm also
: considering the possibility of a Speedy Auto
: since I do like autos, but am a little
: concerned by the smaller case size. I'm
: considering an online purchase but, sighr
: unseen, having second thoughts. Although I
: do love the classic black / black I admit my
: head is also turned by the SS Bezel Autos.
My first ever post in an Omega forum was to ask if they made a Speedy Pro ( Moon watch ) in automatic with a date. ( we're all beginners at some stage ). I now have a few Moonwatches in my collection & not a single automatic ( reduced ) model. I wanted the looks of a Speedy Pro, but the advantages of an automatic & a date feature was a MUST. Unfortunately this combination doesn't exist :-(

Whenever I have tried on an automatic, I always remove it within a few seconds. It is simply too small for my tastes.

IF, I had bought one online, I would have been deeply disappointed. You've mentioned it above & all I can do is to confirm your thoughts. YOU HAVE TO TRY ONE ON ! No-one can decide for you ( 'cept maybe your wife ? ) & there is no substitute for seeing it in real life on your wrist.

There are some new Speedmaster models available from Omega that are Automatics & have date features, but these are too far removed from the original Moon watch for me. However they may appeal to you, you should also look at them.

: Last but not least I'm also drawn to the
: classy looks of a used Day/Date in
: silver/silver/silver but again having a hard
: time deciding.
Sorry, I can't help you there, I only have the moonwatch ( & some of its derivatives the MARK series ). I have relatively few watches without a black dial. I guess I'm pretty boring in my taste ( na .... lets just call it consistent ! )

: Any advice, comments, and in particular links
: to reference etc. would be most appreciated.
: I would like to educate myself before
: jumping into these waters. I am also
: considering the possibility of a Vintage
: speedy Pro - 1967 was the year I was born so
: I would definitely find an excuse to
: consider one of this vintage but definitely
: need to be fully up on details before I
: consider that kind of purchase.
VINTAGE !!! Now that's something I can relate to.

all of my watches are "older". I think they are great value for money. Having said that if you want a speedy from 1967, you ONLY have the moonwatch as an alternative.

There are different models available ( with either the 861 & crown guards or 321 without crown guards movement ), some with professional on the dial or without.

Prices range from around $1500 to $2500 ( roughly ).

I DO have to say though, that a '67 watch is now almost 40 years olds & may not stand up to the wear & tear of a brand new watch.

I certainly would NOT deliberately get my vintage speedmasters wet ( so no swimming, washing dishes, showers, hot tubs, saunas etc etc ),whereas a new speedy should be OK for swimming & the dishes.

Spares is not really a problem for vintage speedies.

: Thanks in advance for any advice/comments!
If you decide to go for a new watch, contact either Keith Downing or John Rochowicz ( they both regularly post here ). They have dealers that they recommend, who will treat you right & give you a good discount.

Let us know what you decide to do.
