I just took mine apart, the links have a sliding door underneath each one. There is then an arched spring each side. these look fragile and half have brocken. I'm going to see if i can fabricate something or try cutting an old mainspring up and using it as is seems the right thickness and arch.

I looked also last night at the monaco clasp that you where talking about. it has a pin connector of some sort keeping it together have you tried giving that a gentle push to see if it comes apart?
