Re: New Carrera Vintage
In Response To: Re: New Carrera Vintage ()

Thanks - this really is a nice, friendly forum with a great group of enthusiasts :) Heuer might be a smaller club than some manufacturers, but it's one well worth being a member of.

Yes, the Carrera really does say "motorsport". Guess the Autavia does too, but it's the Carrera that works best for me - shouldn't push my own posts, but this one ( http://www.chronocentric.com/forums/heuer/index.cgi?read=27980 ) goes into some of the links between the Carrera and Ferrari in the 70s.

Unlike some watch manufacturers, Heuer didn't keep records of its serial numbers to make the process of model and year of manufacture identification easy for us. It's a shame but it does mean we get to do more investigation than we would if we were Omega owners!

I can, however, give you a date range for the watch of approximately 1970 (these first appeared with the "Automatic Chronograph" text late in '69 but with different hands) to 1974 (when the dial execution changed to look like the example Andreas (tiga) posted in response to your first thread). However, the fact yours has a Cal 11 movement helps us place it more accurately within that range - it seems that Cal 12s are starting to come onto the market at the end of 1970, so it's a pretty high probability that your watch is from 1970.

The Calibre 12 replaced the Cal 11 - it has a higher beat movement (so is nominally more accurate), a slightly longer power reserve and sorts some problems with the Cal 11 (like date change), so it can be considered "better". However, that was when the watches were new - after nearly forty years, it depends much more on how well the watch has been serviced in the intervening years and if it's running fine now, then it's always good to have the original movement with the watch.
