Crown positions on this Autavia are similar to gears (or brakes) on this bicycle. There is "in" (which allows you to wind the watch) and "out" (which allows for setting the time and (indirectly) the date). It's pretty simple, and also fairly bullet-proof.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your father; we certainly do welcome you to our little "clubhouse".
