Re: Rolex.. hmm.. my first experience

I personally don't see a big appeal in Rolex's, they seem a heck of a lot of money for something that isn't that distinctive. I found my 14th birthday present in the loft the other day; a Pulsar two tone that owes more than a passing nod to a Rollie day date. I'm not saying I don't like the submariners, I do, but I kind of feel obliged to have one as a watch collector. It's like every watch collection should have core watches; sub, speedy etc. I may get one one day but it'd be way down on my list of 'must haves'.

Good luck finding one you like though and if you do get one, don't forget the Bond NATO! I've got the vintage colours on a cheapy Justina I got on holiday last year. Come to think of it, that looks just like a sub! Hardly wear it though, might go and put it on now...

: Having seen Peters lovely 5513 that he posted a few weeks ago -
: http://www.chronocentric.com/forums/heuer/index.cgi?md=read;id=58013
: I've had a bee in my bonnet about getting one - I've never owned a
: Rolex before, and never properly handled a Sub.

: Cut a long story short, this week I received a matt dial 16800,
: this is the 'transitional' one that has the older school dial,
: but with the sapphire crystal & cyclops. I know a lot of
: people don't like the cyclops, but I've always like it in photos
: I've seen.. kinda quirky.

: Anyway, I got it, and it was nice, I really liked it, but.. well, I
: was a little underwhelmed.. it wasn't as special as I thought it
: would be. I appreciate it for what it is, but it didn't make me
: smile (like my Monnin does), if that makes sense. Oddly, after
: wearing it for a day (I thought I would bond with it & give
: it a chance), the cyclops became annoying, I can see why many
: aren't keen. I gave it a fair chance, but the next morning, I
: sold it to a friend of mine.

: So, I don't know where I stand now, maybe a 5513 like Peters (see
: link above) would be a much better match for me. Plus, I
: actually like the white gold surrounds on the hour indices,
: which goes against the grain - I've read that the non 'WGS' are
: more sought after, but I think they brighten up the dial and
: offer that lovely look when the light catches them (like Peters
: photo), especially with that creamy lume.

: So, should I try a 5513? Does anyone else have a dislike for one
: Sub model and but love another?

: Your thoughts would be appreciated.

: Stewart
