Perhaps it is something that was givin to him from a father or a grandfather or a figure he admires. A gift. Seeing as how it is from the 70's (so you say) it may very well have belonged to a former entity and was then later passed on to him as a gift or privelage of the sort for him to keep as his own. Perhaps for an accomplishment or a remembrance or something of the sort.
