Re: Vintage Seamaster
In Response To: Re: Vintage Seamaster ()

Thanks for the comments Derek!

(I think, like me, you are in the UK. I think we might also share a profession (although I tend to keep quiet about it!) I am in the middle of Scotland.)

So I wonder about the service it
: has had: how do you know who the dealer is
: and that he is "fairly reputable
: looking"? Unless you are really
: satisfied with the service, I personally
: would have it done again.

There is a receipt for "overhaul and service" from The Old Watch Shop (www.theoldwatchshop.com). I don't really know much about them of course but they do seem to have some experience of vintage Omegas. The new crystal is signed, so they must have a good supplier for parts etc.

A full service from STS costs £170. Chris Heal (www.chealwatch.co.uk) quotes £60 and seems to have good reputation. Do you have any other suggestions for a service? I keep promising I will send Chris something but never quite get round to it.

Are you going to send it to STS or
: someone else?

STS have already quoted £130 for restoring dial (and "part repair charge" whatever that means!) but they have not actually seen the watch itself. Last time they did a fantastic restoration job on my late father's watch, so I think I will get them to do this one too. Chris Heal has a restoration page (www.chealwatch.co.uk/dialrestoring.htm) but they seem to be all re-coated rather than cleaned. As I say though, I am not sure of the real difference.

Many thanks again for all the shared knowledge!
