Well at least in the context of the Omegamania auction this has been discussed extensively on various forums.

But in a nutshell, many have pointed out mistakes that were made in the verification of watches (see also Steve's comment below). But we should also keep in mind that there are probably few people at Omega who know and recognize all the variations and intricacies of all the models that were produced over the years. So in this case, a dedicated collector might actually have an advantage.

So was this an embarrassing slip that came back to bite them? Maybe..... But I don't think this was intentional. My 2c
