Monaco Ref Location?

I'm new to this watch thing. Having noticed all the Monaco's with different Ref numbers, I was wondering where this number could be found.

If I didn't know the appearance of a monaco perfectly, how could I tell if it was Ref 1133 or 73663 (I know ones manual and ones automatic), just curious if theres a way to see the actual number.
