The 1960s
In Response To: The 1950s ()

The BMW story in the 60s was something of a turnaround, with the Neue Klasse saloons proving to be something of a success. There was still scope for some interesting niche cars around the saloons that were the bread and butter though.

3200 CS
This was built on the 3200 saloon chassis, so could trace its lineage back to the 501. As such, it's something of a successor to the 503 but the Bertone design is often considered less successful than that car.

700
Before the success of the Neue Klasse gave BMW stability, they felt a need for some sort of follow-up to the Isetta economy cars. The result was the rear-engined 700, using a ~700cc flat-2 engine from the motorcycle range. So hardly 911 competitors! Actually launched at the tail end of the 50s in 1959, these convertible versions are however 60s cars.

2000 CS
The follow-on to the 3200 CS but on a newer Neue Klasse chassis, the 2000 CS was notable for its so-called "oriental" headlights (with typical 60s/70s lack of discretion, though they were never officially called that).

1600 GT
Another little-known BMW, the 1600 GT is in fact the result of BMW's buyout of the Glas concern and is in fact more of a re-badging exercise than a "pure" BMW. Still a nice little car though!
