It's the same as plastic surgery..

.. if you really have to do it, do it gently and properly.

There are many plastic surgeons but only a handful of them do a proper job: you can tell that something has been done but when the final result is not worse than the starting point, it is nearly a success (and in this case does not decrease or decrease too much the value of the watch).

Ciao,

: While I suspect that the Carrera shown below (and currently
: listed on eBay) is not likely to be attractive to many of our
: readers, I wonder what our readers think of the merits of
: reluming dials and hands? Let's call this an informal survey of
: our readers, and see how our readers may react to reluming
: dots on dial (as shown below, on the Siffert)? reluming numerals
: or in the alternative, stripping them (as shown below, on the
: Cosmonaute)? reluming entire markers? reluming, refilling or
: touching up hands? Tell us how you think about relumes: when is
: it acceptable to you, personally? what impact do you see on
: value, in terms of what you might be willing to pay? Would you
: prefer to relume the original hands or replace them with fresh
: service hands?

: Bottom line: Do you leave it alone or touch it up . . . gently, of
: course? Assume, for purposes of this discussion, that the
: reluming will be done to the highest standards, rather than by
: the local cake decorator.

: We may have discussed this previously, but I am interested in
: current views.
